Well hola there, welcome back to the blog :), it's your resident blog expert Abby, and I'm here to update you on Friday and Saturday. Vaminos!
Friday was a busy day, not in terms of work, we just did a lot. We woke up earlier (Boooo. I am also the resident morning hater.) on Friday morning to get back to picking up garbage with the Renacer kids again. Only problem, it was raining on and off that morning. So as we were trying to collect bottles and little infuriating pieces of Styrofoam that seemed to appear out of nowhere, we kept getting called back to wait out the rain under our shelter. So after about an hour, and hour in which we actually got a lot done, we called it a day, and said goodbye to the Renacer kids. We decided to walk around the Colonial Zone of the city, exploring around more. By 12:15 we all found each other again, and as it turns out, one of the tour guides walking around had dragged all of us kids to a chocolate shop to get free samples at some point in our day. I certainly wasn't complaining on getting samples of dark, milk or white chocolate pieces and cocoa tea and hot chocolate. We drove back to base and ate lunch, before it was revealed that we would be visiting the botanical gardens. So around 3, we all piled into our van (which is very cozy when you squish 4 in the back row and it's 30 degrees outside), and drove over. We rode the little train around the grounds and got out at a Japanese garden that was very beautiful and had lots of turtles and ducks. Fun fact, one duck at the pond does not like Raina. We explored a little more before getting sprayed by the fountains and piling into the van once more to drive home. After dinner, we were granted permission to move extra mattresses into one of the meeting rooms in the Synergia building and watch a movie! It was a great time, and we hung out in there after the movie until it was time for bed.
Saturday was an amazing day. We got to go to the beach! We had a couple of detours/problems to deal with in the morning, like replacing the faulty tire on our van, but we eventually made it. People took a dip in the ocean before we had lunch, which was amazing, and then we went straight back to swimming. The guys brought their snorkels, so they found a coral reef and went about exploring that, and I'm fairly sure they didn't get chased by a shark this time. But you'd have to ask them. We also found some cool things while in the water, like pretty shells, little crabs, starfish, and snails. Near the end of our beach time, we all got pina coladas. Without alcohol, don't worry parents. By the time we got home, it was pretty apparent that almost everyone had gotten sunburnt while we were at the beach, whoops! Safe to say we've been using a lot of aloe, and taking lots of cold showers (although we don't get the choice of hot water anyways). After we got back and ate dinner, we attended a youth service put on by Wendy's church, a lady who works at Synergia. It was a very enjoyable service, I liked the music a lot, since I recognized some of the songs. We also met a girl named Hannah, who had come to the DR from Ohio for four months to live with a family and do some work with college kids. It was cool to hear about her story and the opportunities we could have after high school. Once we got back, we did circle time, and got the third package that family sent from home. I know everyone was very excited and grateful to receive the packages and letters. Thank you to all the family members who took the time to organize that for us, I know we all appreciate it a lot.
