Welcome to our official International Block blog! Here you will find information about our adventures and activities as a team, as we explore and learn about the Dominican Republic. This blog will be updated every two or so days, and each team member will take turns updating you on our whereabouts.
So we have arrived! Other than some confiscated peanut butter, we had no obstacles in our travels and our journey flew by smoothly. There was however, another team staying at the Synergia base where we will be staying the rest of our time here. So we stayed at a house for two nights that, to our delight, had a pool! While we were there, we made friends with the dogs (perros), and a cat (gato) that we lovingly named Lily.
Since we arrived fairly late on the first day, we took a short dip in the pool, and then went to bed. The second day we visited the staff of Synergia, and had an amazing lunch with them. After that, our host, Franklin, took us to explore the city's Colonial Zone, where Christopher Columbus first landed in the Americas. We visited a cathedral and a museum, and became perches for nearly hundreds of pigeons (thankfully no one got pooped on). We made our way back to the house for time in the pool and with our best friend Lily. We had dinner and our first circle time to check in on how we were feeling after our first full day. Tomorrow we will be moving into the base that will be our home for the next six weeks.
It was a couple of pretty busy days, so we were all feeling pretty tired, but filled with excitement for what lies ahead in our journey. It hasn't quite kicked in yet that we are actually here for six weeks, everything still feels unfamiliar, but we have already settled into somewhat of a routine. The language barrier is more difficult than we anticipated, since we really only know 4 phrases, but as we spend more time here, we will figure out how to communicate better. As we are writing this we are surrounded by music and friends and the rooster in the car,
Abby DeGier and Alice Burton
