Hi friends & families!
It’s your favourite sunburned and sizzling hosts KIA (Kai) and Haven. We just came back from a full, exciting, and messy day at Centro De Fe. WAKA WAKA AYY AYY was the wake up call this morning, and to our surprise, it had rained during the night, so we were blessed with an overcast sky. It was very nice considering we were all in long pants and skirts, expected to be painting outside all day. After a filling breakfast and a backroad trip to CDF (thank you to our great bus driver for getting us there safely), we arrived at the school and began devos led by Ryan. After a quick activity to get to know our fellow students, we all sang a couple of worship songs, in Spanish AND English. We are sooooo twannnny (Nicaraguan slang for cool.) As you can tell, we are quickly adapting to the culture here, jajaja.
After devos, we split into 4 different groups to visit the houses of some of the students here. It was a lot of fun, especially for Mikayla’s group as they were surprised by a FIESTA for her 18th birthday on Friday. We had a piñata, lots of fruit, candies, bracelets, and more. The families were all incredibly hospitable and we could not be more grateful for our translators (shoutout to our awesome translators) because they allowed us to connect with so many wonderful people. After our home visits, we returned to the school, and with a quick outfit change, we ate a typical plantain-rice-bean-meat lunch with a refreshment. Once our bellies were full, it was time for painting! Kai and I made sure to apply LOTS like I mean LOTS of sunscreen. Even though it made our blisters sting, we were not trying to get more fried. (Spoiler alert: we beat the sun!)
Our group split up into starting to paint the infamous mural, a random wall, and some desks. We had a lot of fun connecting with the students here, practicing our Espanol and getting paint on each other. Haven and Carly convinced some of our friends to DoorDash some McD’s to Centro de Fe. The fries and the ice cream looked like it hit the spot, even though we didn’t try any because we were muy full. Carly made sure to share, don’t worry! Haven and Carly eventually migrated to the back wall because the sun + haven’s burn = no bueno. Back there, we spent lots of time jajajaing (laughing) with our Nicaraguan friends. You know the saying, time flies when you’re having fun? Safe to say we’re living proof because today went by in an absolute flash. Kai, on the other hand, had to spend some jail time in an AC’d room, because the sun almost (key word ALMOST) beat him. We all ended our time at the school today with paint splatters, but just wait for tomorrow, because that’s the day we can actually go loco (crazy!)
On the bus ride home, accompanied by the sunset and Mr. Carvajal’s sweet, tender, precious, loving snores, we stopped at La Union (the grocery store) to buy coffee, and a whole bunch of snacks. We eventually made it back to our home, where we had a delicious Italian style dinner (lasagna) and some students met a little local lizard that goes by Geoff. Soon after we had team time with a beautiful devotion led by Ryan (againnnn) and Carly, consisting of simply worship. It was maravilloso (wonderful) to sit through. And now we’re trying to relax but shaking in our boots because we can’t wait for NATHANS 18TH BIRTHDAY ON THURSDAY!!!!!!! We are looking forward to another great day at Centro De Fe and savouring our last moments here in Nicaragua. We miss you all and talk about home every night.
P.S. Our beloved Kajito is cuddling with his flotation devices each night, so need to worry about him Van Egmond Family!
P.P.S. As we were writing your innocent Kaj managed to turn a ballpoint pen into a hand grenade of INK. Sarah unfortunately experienced the aftershocks of the explosion.
Singing off (and hopefully our sun burns too)

We hope we're not too late to post here tonight! We've missed a couple of days (sorry Kaitlin.) Your brother was supposed to take a turn but he got busy and didn't write. We are loving hearing about all of your adventures. Great job redeeming yourselves with the water polo victory after the devasting soccer loss! We're sure that Kaitlin was a big part of the victory (haha). She gets her athletic ability (or lack thereof) from her mother.) We are enjoying reading about the amazing relationships that you are forming with the people that you have met. Sharing God's love with others is such a blessing; both to you and to the people that you share it with. We know that you are forming memories that will be with you forever, and we pray for you all every day. Thanks for the pictures... keep them coming! Lots of love to Kaitlin

Feliz Cumpleaños to Nathan and Mikayla! Glad to hear all the updates, it sounds like the team is bonding well. Profe Saul please let us know how the tile floors look upstairs that we poured last year!! It’s so cool to see my brother leading devotions. Well done Ryan. Curious to know if you have been singing yet? I wanted to share Colossians 4:5-6 with you: “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” In the ACS Bible study (quick plug for the study Wednesday at lunch and shoutout to Nathan) we were discussing about how it is very easy to be careless about the posture that we present ourselves with, even if we are doing “good things”. The way that we live affirms and validates the gospel message that we are sharing! And as we steep ourselves in the word of God and Christian community (like a teabag is steeped in water) every aspect of our lives and who we are will become evident with the flavour of God that cannot be hidden. It is a sweet taste in a world that needs Gods love! That is my encouragement for today! I am still continually praying for you all every day. Enjoy that hot thick humid weather while you can! I hope to be shredding gnarly backcountry lines until mid April I back at home! Blessings, Matt 🤙

It has been so fun following along with your updates and seeing the great painting work you have been doing and how well you are serving together as a team. Ryan, great job on your devotions and we love seeing your photos. Finish well, keep supporting each other, stay flexible, and enjoy every last moment of the experience. We are very proud of you and cannot wait to hear the stories when you get back.

So great to see you enjoy the house visits. Happy birthday to Mikayla and Nathan. Wow a Bday in Central America that’s so cool! A Bday you’ll never forget. A piñata at your birthday last year the coolest thing that happened on our home visits is Noah W got peed on by a dog. I see those Mangos yum yum… Great job on the painting this team has done the best (from what I can tell by the photos) by keeping the paint on the walls and desks and not on each other. MacDonalds? Dons??? For real? Take note in our 16th year ACS students finally succumbed to the need for a cultural taste of “home” (it feels weird calling Dons a taste of home). I’m curious what Nicaraguan door dash look like tho. Guy on a motorbike or a Smokie Scooter is my guess. I guess the 4 days wait for Dons was too long to wait for some. Pls someone draw a Dons logo (Golden Arches) near Haven and Carly’s name in the mural so we can commemorate the moment. 😂🎨🖌️ Those with sunburns are hopefully now in hindsight recalling Saul’s and my discussion about the location of the Sun near the Equator and having that “oohhh they literally meant put sunscreen on multiple times a day.” That’s ok. It happens every year. Hopefully someone brought aloe. Glad someone got a picture of Saul sleeping on the bus. It’s a sign of a good leader when they can catch those little moments of rest. Proud of you all! Nathan I hope you had a great Bday today! Mr B

Such great updates! Thank you for all the lovely photos and stories about what you are doing. Amanya, we miss you so much. Even Shota admitted that he missed you. But we’re so glad you are there because it looks like you are having a life-changing experience. (And also it’s very boring here with almost constant rain all week.)

It’s great to see that you are all still full of smiles and energy after painting in the hot sun (Profe Saúl looks a little beat). Blistering sunburns are the absolute worst, but good job for not letting it slow you down and remaining positive. How special that the community went out of their way to celebrate Mikayla’s birthday in such a big way! That will be a birthday to remember! Don’t forget to thank all your awesome leaders for all that they do for you each day! Here’s a verse for you guys: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:33-34 NLT P.S. tell Kaj Casper is upset he’s been replaced with flotation devices. Also, Kaj sure is on a roll with all his innocent mishaps. He will probably try blame it on the heat.

First sun burn of the year is the worst! Glad it didn’t beat you guys. It must be fairly funny for the Nicaraguan people to watch all these Canadian kids fry in the sun!!
