Around the world, over 260 million children don’t attend school. Many reasons contribute to this: distance from school, child marriage, conflict and terrorism, high tuition fees, disability, and so much more. Some of them make it to school but drop out early. Some of them never make it to school at all.
But even the children who do make it into school are still at a huge disadvantage.
Just because children are in school doesn't mean they are learning. Many teachers are passionate about education, but remain untrained with little to no support for professional development or education of their own. Teaching is often undervalued, creating huge teacher shortages.
Student struggle to receive a quality education for countless reasons. Long travel distances, material poverty, the threat of child marriage, political conflict, gender or disability discrimination, and so much more keep children away from school.
Many schools, especially in rural communities, are often underequipped, creating poor learning conditions. Overcrowded classrooms, no desks, a lack of clean running water or electricity make it difficult for those children who are in school to focus.
