Day 5

Greetings from Nicaragua.

Authors: Kaj and Nathan.

This morning, we were woken up to the sounds of Saúl blasting La Chona. After getting our stuff packed for the big, divertido (fun), pool day up ahead, we sat down together and ate breakfast at 7 A.M sharp as usual. Breakfast consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, and cereal. This morning looked different than most others. Instead of driving anywhere first thing in the morning, we got picked up by our friends from Centro de Fe. Meanwhile, a group of five elite students was selected to pick up our host and buy groceries for the pool day. While at the grocery store, Kaj was instructed to go grab some inflatable balls for the pool day. Kaj accidentally grabbed a pair (or two) of water wings instead of beach balls. While trying to take a quick selfie, one of the store employees offered to take a full-fledged candid photo of us in the store. It was only shortly after paying for the items that we realised that we bought the wrong item. The team decided that as punishment, Kaj must wear the swimming floaties during the course of the pool day.

After arriving, we wasted no time putting on sunscreen before beginning our communal horse play despite a language barrier. After general fooling around, we started our water polo championship game. Tensions were high as Canada was down one from our previous soccer match, which was quite humbling. Knowing the stakes, us Canadians took this redemption match seriously. We had a slight advantage as some of our opponents were scared of the deeper water.  We won 11-10. We had a great time and enjoyed wrestling each other for the ball. There were many times when we feared for the life of our beloved little Evan. He had three people on him and was fighting for every breath as he struggled to stay afloat!

Shortly after our intense game, we sat down and ate a scrumptious lunch. Now, we had operation sandia commence. It was a blood bath of watermelon everywhere. Operation sandia was a success. We devoured almost every slice, so, we went back into the pool for some extraordinary chicken fights. As we neared the end of the pool day, we decided to take a big group photo with everyone in it. Well, that is, almost everyone. Profe Mike had fallen asleep in a hammock as a result of all the nothing that he had done earlier today. Because of Profe Mike’s impromptu Siesta, he missed out on our group photo. After the group photo, we all packed up and headed back on the bus for a ride back home.

On the bus ride, we all talked together and made deeper connections with one another. Two hours after returning from the pool, our sunburns started to set in. Haven’s face had become a radiant red, Anna had lost her battle to the sun, despite her valiant efforts, and Kaj had succumbed to the most legendary farmer’s tan of all time. Finalmente (finally), we would like to recognize our commentors as they have gotten their messages of love, jokes, and interesting comments across to us and helped us stay connected. We encourage you guys to keep commenting.

Gracias, the Nicaragua Team

Kaj, what a hilarious story! Can you wear them at the next pool day but maybe add a donut floaty and some googles and have someone lifting you up in the air pretending you are an airplane?? lol I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

What a fun day you guys had! Classic games of chicken fight and water polo. So cool that you were able to connect with the CdF students at the pool and on the bus. Kaj nice touch. I actually think Kaj knew he needed the safety of the water wings. The water safety example he set was a good one for our Nicaragua friends who are often nervous of swimming. That’s so nice of you Kaj. Also Kaj you should make a playlist of Saul’s songs to wake up to in Canada since you’ve had trouble with morning alarms in the past I recall. Look now you’re waking up at 6:30am without mom and dad waking you up. Whoop whoop for cross cultural adulting! Doritos and Siestas for Mike I see. It’s a great recruiting campaign to get staff to volunteer for the trip in future years. We will be sure not include pictures of any “puffy feet”. So if we had a sunburn scale called the Alex Foster Scale and the Alex Foster 2025 burn was a 10/10 how bad are these burns according to the Alex Foster Scale? Any seeping blisters? Actually Alex’s pain gave him some “riz” with the sympathetic ladies from CdF. Neither Alex or us leaders recommend this tactic by the way. 🤣. Poor Evan… I felt for him as I read about his trials in the pool, then I remembered that he’s one tough dude and probably wildly popular which is why our Nicaraguan friends were crawling all over him. May Evans “chaRIZma” overflow with abundance in all of you. In all seriousness, it’s the Holy Spirit in and through you that is the perpetual light that shines in all the spaces you travel. It’s mid week, mid-ish trip. You might be tired and cranky or irritable, it’s in these moments we are invited and challenged to lean not on our own strength but God’s. Thanks Marshal for the reminder that God is ever and always near to us. Hope you have a great day today!!!

Hiya again looks like fun 🤩 how is Amanya doing? If she is not doing well you can call pest control -555-555-5555. If you have problems just get candy and bribe her with it. I have a joke for you it’s called surprise game - two old men named frank and Saul sat on a bench talking and the conversation turned to baseball. Frank asked Saul do you think that there’s baseball in heaven? Saul thought for a moment and replied I don’t know but if I get there first I’ll find a way to tell you, but if you get there first you do the same. They shook on it and didn’t speak of it again. unfortunately a few months later frank passed away. Saul soon returned to the bench where he and his friend sat and talked for such a long time. one day he began to dose off and heard franks voice. Saul asked, frank is that you? in a shaky voice. yes it is Saul, he heard Saul. stunned, he asked is there baseball in heaven? well I have good news and bad news for you. give me the good news first, Saul said. okay there is baseball in heaven, frank admitted. Saul exclaimed that’s wonderful! What is the bad news? Frank paused then said you’re pitching on Tuesday.

I hope Kaj get to keep those water wings to remind him of his failure.

The excellent narration once again gives us such a clear picture of the last 24 hours shenanigans. Classic Kaj making innocent mistakes and buying the wrong item. I think he comes by it honestly 😜. Dad wants to know if you got a water wings tan to go along with the sweet farmers tan? It’s great to hear that all of you are fully embracing the new friendships you’re making and spending quality time playing around. I bet all of you are sad to be missing the atmospheric rivers and instead having soaking up all that warm glorious sunshine. Here’s a verse to encourage you to continue to be generous in your joy, love, words and actions: “because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.” ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬-‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Beautiful singing on the ACS stories, you all have a gift and others around are so grateful to receive it and experience it , music is a powerful connection. Hugs to Haven and anyone else who needs one ! The doggies miss you too, Juno keeps trying to steal your shoes.

Man, it's really so great to see you guys really getting into it and connecting both with the Centro de Fe students and your own team on this trip! Also, Kaj in water wings? You know, Kaj is just so tall that he probably couldn't have even been able to read the label when he purchased them. On a more serious note, I'd like to encourage you guys by saying that even though trips like these make it seem like God is so big, don't confuse that with Him being far or distant. Yes, God is great and big, but he is also personal and near to each and every person who takes refuge in him. Excited to hear what God has in store for you next! - Marshall

Great update Nathan and Kaj! Congratulations on the water polo win. The pool looks refreshing on such hot day. I love all the pictures! Can’t wait to see what adventures you all have tomorrow.

You guys had me worried there for a moment. If you had lost the water polo match I would have ended up blaming Cameron because from what I saw his form needs some work. Obviously, I’m only joking, but still, I would have been very sad if you had lost — again. Also, I really hope Kaj kept the water wings on for the game… he looked very cool with them on LOL!!!

LET’S GO! So proud of you guys for winning the waterpolo match. And as I mentioned in my last comment, I knew it was only a matter of time before the burns came in. 😂 On another note, I think Kaj needs to learn to not be so selfish…clearly Evan needed those water wings more than he did. Poor guy!
