Hola from our new home in Nicaragua hosted by Marshall and Alex.
We started the day with an iconic performance of vocal excellence from Koenraad and the miraculous sign of God for healing all the sun burnt tomatoes in our midst (Alex blistered). We gathered around for a nutritious breakfast of eggs, bacon, beans with rice, and an arrangement of tropical fruits.
We hopped into the white van (not sketchy) onto our first day of painting and concrete work at Centro de Fe. Upon our arrival Nicaraguan students led songs and devotions. We split into 3 painting groups and 1 tiling group. Some started downstairs scraping the walls, others started sifting sand for the concrete - all of us were sweating like the dickens. Without fail, Saúl (Mr. Carvajal), somehow was always one foot away reminding you to hydrate. Painting groups were scraping the walls, washing them and brushing away the ever present dust before starting to paint. As Alex was staring at the wall in agony, lunch arrived. We sat, alternating with Nicaraguans and Canadians, enjoying our scrumptious feast of rice, steak with Chimi Churri sauce, thoroughly mashed potatoes, and a puffy bun. In a battle between plastic utensils and tough steak, we persevered into victory.
The second half of the day was blood, sweat, and a lot of dirt. While young men (and Keziah) carried heavy buckets of concrete up and down the stairs, others were slacking off in front of a fan. Before the end of the day, finishing touches were taking place: the last buckets of concrete were poured and the final strokes of paint were brushed in the rooms and on the mural. Let's just say the team had some unique methods of cleaning off the dirt on our legs.
We headed back and took a quick stop at La Union, the local grocery store, to get snacks. On the drive home, we inhaled our cold snacks and saw a couple cows walk past us. At the Nehemiah Centre, some took a much needed shower and we headed into dinner. After dinner, we gathered for our group meeting with a devo led by Lyra and Brendan. Many cried after a heart felt group discussion (especially Roy).
Thank you all for continuing to read the blog. Make sure to view Instagram for more updates.
P.S. Mom, your responses have brought great joy to the group despite my embarrassment, but now everyone loves you so much! Bet you are looking down and laughing to yourself right now - and dad, I've definitely been "going with the flow" during the trip.
P.P.S. Hi Mom and Dad. I love you and I can't wait to come home and see you all.

Wow! While photos never quite capture the heat, you all look extremely sweaty and hot. Hope no one has heat stroke. Amazing work team. And Ruby, we never knew you had such stellar painting skills. We will be putting these to use when you get home. Hope everyone is doing well. Ru - we miss you so so much. We hiked in the Highlands today and we all kept saying how much we missed you and how much you would have loved it. We felt you with us, especially during one family member’s meltdown. Love you so much!!!

I'm baaaack! Missed a day there, so sorry to let everyone down. Thankfully Devyn represented our family well. Marshall, this blog post is so well written and I can't believe you even made it FUNNY! Were you forced to type cute things like "sun burnt tomatoes" and "scrumptious"? Who even are you?!? Anyone who's ever received an email (or text) from my kid knows that he typically writes like a 60 year old professor. I'm literally blown away and love this blog post so so much. ALEX!!! How are you even functioning!?! Why are you not in the fetal position in a dark room? How can you be talking about snacks at a time like this!?! I've experienced a burn of this nature before on ma belly and the blazing inferno 24/7 for days was so intense... life lessons man. Marshall saying the toxic paint fumes smell good- that checks out for him. But like... your brain dude. What I'm wondering about is, why is no one talking about diarrhea? How's that going over there? Marshall opted to not take Dukoral and to just bring the pills as this made logical sense to him and also, he didn't want us to spend the money for both. Two days before leaving, his supportive buddies Matthew and Noah found out and told him he was going to die from diarrhea on the trip. This brought us so much comfort and didn't make us regret this decision at all. Oh man I'm laughing so hard over here I'm crying... I hope this is landing well on your end?! Okay well I should wrap up for today... Marshall mentioned I was loved by everyone but he never actually said he loved me himself, so I will just remain hopeful that I am not ruining his life in order to entertain the masses. Covering you all in prayer as you serve and "sweat like the dickens" doing manual labour in that crazy heat! I would so be on Team Fan. PS. Marshall, I did not look down but I definitely laughed out loud!! That's only 50% so nice try, but I win. ;) Love you.

Sounds like your trip is going super well! We love seeing the updates, videos, and reading the blog. Our highlight so far has been seeing such an accurate and impressive walrus imitation. Well done! We are sure the students will remember what a walrus is for many years to come. And the concrete work and painting you all did looks amazing. We hope the end of your time in Nicaragua goes well and that you have a safe trip home. Love you Matthew!

Hey Marshall I have been enjoying seeing photos, videos and reading blog posts about your trip as we sit here in Abbotsford freezing!! (Send me some of that sun and warmth!) I can’t imagine how painful those burns must be feeling for your team mates, hope you were spared! I, also hope you were part of the “some people” who showered after a hard day working and sweating in dirt!!! 🥵 Love ya, Aunti Christy

Well done team! Giving of your time and service to others is so rewarding. So beyond proud of you all. Lucas I hope you were one of the ones who put on sunscreen! A burnt lifeguard isn’t helpful. I love you and miss you. I even miss your “what if” questions. I haven’t had to answer hard science questions in a whole week. Love you so much!
