Today was our ‘cultural day’ as a team! We spent time bonding as a group and exploring Nicaragua.
After breakfast we took the bus to the “Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya” —The Masaya Volcano National Park — which contains one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. It is the first and largest national park in the country. We drove up the mountain to the top of the volcano where we then climbed up a long flight of steps to get a panoramic view. We could only stay at the crater peak for 20 minutes because of the high concentration of sulphur in the air.
Then, we headed to the rainforest! We learned about how coffee is grown and processed, and enjoyed cacao fruit and star fruit right off a tree. Then we took a massive truck that could manage the vertical on this road and headed up high in the rainforest. We went zip lining (2 km + 17 platforms + 11 exchanges that included two suspension bridges) and some members decided to try different ways of zip lining including “super man” (head first), doubling up, and upside down! Mrs VanderVelde even decided to go superman at the very end!
We had lunch in Granada which is a colourful Spanish colonial city. After lunch we walked around Central Park which is now a festive market square filled with stands selling souvenirs. We had a chance to purchase souvenirs.
We then went to Lake Nicaragua (the largest freshwater lake in the country) and went on a boat ride. We could see the ring of volcanoes in the distance, beautiful trees, and even fed some monkeys!
For dinner we went to a pizza restaurant and enjoyed some time together as a whole team including Peter and Trudy, and Nilda and Juan from EduDeo.
When we got back to the Nehemiah Centre, almost everyone played a big game of basketball (AND THE GIRLS WON WOOO). Our devotion time provided the chance to read scripture, connect and pray. It is always good to debrief our day and pray for our entire team.
To conclude our night we played an exciting game of fishbowl that involved lots of laughter, yelling, and two accidentally broken water glasses! Definite high energy! ✨🇳🇮
