Guillermo’s Open Door

Guillermo’s Open Door

April 10, 2026

By Guillermo Yan Alfonso

I come from a humble family. My mother was the daughter of a Haitian woman who arrived in the Dominican Republic at just 14 years old in search of a better life, and my father arrived very young to work in the sugarcane fields. In an environment focused on survival, there was little time to think about education: my father reached the equivalent of eighth grade, and my mother only completed second grade. Even so, they both raised me with values that shaped my life: honest work, perseverance, and love for others. There were six children in my family, growing up with very little, but sustained by a strong sense of family.

My life changed profoundly when I was 13 years old. My mother lost her battle with cancer at just 32, leaving six children orphaned, including a two-year-old girl, my sister Lola. That loss marked my story, but it also planted a conviction that has guided my journey ever since: no one should be left without opportunities because of their origin or the circumstances they were born into.

In the midst of that reality, God used Edudeo’s partner in the Dominican Republic as a key instrument in my social, spiritual, and professional formation.  I was able to complete my elementary education in a Christ-centered school.

Then, without even having finished high school, I was given the opportunity to serve as a teacher. It was an act of trust that transformed my life. Over time, I served as a teacher at various educational levels and later as a school director until 2009. There I learned that education is much more than teaching content, but it is believing in people and walking with them through their growth process.

Since then, I have continued participating in the training of teachers, while the Lord has continued to shape me, equipping me with a heart willing to love and serve others. Thanks to gifts towards continuing education from people like you I was able to complete a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics, and later a master’s degree.

Today, that education allows me to actively participate in the training of leaders and organizations, multiplying the impact far beyond what I ever imagined.  I now serve as the executive director of EduDeo’s partner in the Dominican Republic, coming full circle to work in the very organization that shaped my early education.

For all these reasons, your commitment to teacher training has a deeply personal meaning for me. It is not just an institutional project; it is an open door for others to write a different story.

Today, I walk this mission accompanied. I am married to Quenia, my partner in life and ministry, and together we have formed a family of five children, along with the blessing of two grandchildren, who remind us every day why it is worth continuing to sow hope for future generations.

Sinergia FLT

EduDeo’s partner in the Dominican Republic is one of the most established partners in our global network. Sinergia has been faithfully building and strengthening Christ‑centred education for over a decade. Guillermo’s story is only possible because of this long-term investment: years of training teachers, equipping leaders, and ensuring that children and young people have access to education that shapes both mind and heart.

As we look ahead, we invite you to continue writing stories like Guillermo’s, stories of hope, dignity, and transformation, through your generous support.
