Stitching Hope: Ghanaian Students are loving their town.

At the heart of the town of Tojeh in the Volta region of Ghana a quiet transformation is unfolding - one stitch at a time.

Inside the Center for Empowerment and Enterprise Development (CEED), 42 fashion students, 24 in the Social Studies Year 2 class and 18 in Year 3, recently took part in a challenge to think about their community. Their teachers, inspired by an EduDeo workshop, encouraged them to look beyond the classroom and identify a pressing need in a nearby community. The goal? To apply their skills in a way that would make a tangible difference.

One student’s observations sparked an idea. During a visit to the school to identify a need, she noticed children carrying their school supplies in makeshift bags—old rice sacks and plastic carriers barely holding together. The image lingered, and when shared with her peers, it ignited a collective response: “Why not make proper bags for them?”

Thanks to the Creative and Critical Enterprise training happening at the school, the students didn’t just see a problem—they saw an opportunity to serve.

Under the guidance of CEED team leader Mawulorm Gbekor, and other facilitators the students gathered leftover fabric scraps (materials typically discarded after sewing projects) and began transforming them into sturdy, colorful school bags. The room came alive with purpose. Each snip of scissors and line of stitching became a symbol of care, creativity, and community.

When the final batch of bags was ready, the students packed them up and made their way to the school in town. The schoolyard buzzed with curiosity as children gathered to see what the visitors had brought. As the handmade bags were distributed, the awkward rice sacks and plastic bags were replaced with vibrant patchworks of color and pattern. The children’s eyes lit up. Gratitude filled the air, followed by laughter and joyful chatter.

Students holding up colourful cloth bags.“Thank you!” echoed through the schoolyard, a chorus of appreciation that deeply moved the fashion students. In that moment, they realized they weren’t just learning to sew - they were learning to serve.

This initiative is a powerful example of Teaching for Transformation in action. It’s not just about vocational training; it’s about nurturing hearts and minds to care for others, to give back, and to become agents of change in their communities.

Through Christ-centered projects supported by your donations, students are discovering that the most meaningful creations are those that make a difference. Thank you!
