Day 3

It was another beautiful day in Belize City. The breakfast crew included Pastor Ernest, Wally, Murray and Cynthia, but Cynthia was barred from participating. The sun rises shortly after 6:00 a.m. and our breakfast crew were busy making something that Pastor Ernest calls “Jacks” (a deep fried pastry that we cut open and filled with scrambled eggs).

After breakfast and cleanup, we boarded the bus and Pastor Ernest drove us to the school. We arrived about 9:30. Today, we all knew that we would be completing what we started yesterday. The sanding and paint crew (Dawn, Cynthia, Helen, Anne, Geraldine and I) completed painting the girls bathroom. Willie and Wally finished tiling the toilet stalls and shower in the guys bathroom. The digging crew (Bernie, Erik, Murray) finished digging the sewage hole and then poured concrete to form the footings around the outside. A new crew was formed: Helen and Murray, Justine, Cynthia and Anne. They started preparing rebar for a new sidewalk that will be constructed.

A highlight, earlier today, around 11:00 a.m. was that Geraldine, Helen, Cynthia, Dawn, and Anne went into the Grade 1 class to lead a reading group. I know that it was especially significant for Geraldine because she had set this as a goal for herself before we left.

The work day ended around 4:00 p.m. and Pastor Ernest drove us back to his house for supper. We are looking forward to another rowdy round of “Catch Phrase”.
