Hello to everyone in the north! You probably know by now that we have arrived safely, so your next question is what are we doing?
Well…. After sleeping in an hour too late (but it wasn’t a problem – Dominican’s have flex time) we had orientation followed by a delicious breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit, and cereal. Then we headed to the jobsite. It was about a half hour drive through the city where we saw everything from goats being slaughtered, to cows eating garbage with two stray dogs, to people being as friendly as Canadians could never understand, to entire families riding on one motorcycle. It’s truly amazing to see the differences and yet also some similarities.
Once we arrived on the job site and were immediately put to work sorting wood and pulling all the nails out. Then we started to cut some rebar (metal poles) and Brendan and Willem bent them into shape. By the end of the day they were pretty much pros after doing that 400+ times. The rest of us did various jobs from cleaning up the back alley, transporting wood, and making moulds for cement. We were served a delicious hot lunch of potatoes and ham. It’s pretty humid here but don’t worry – we’re keeping hydrated and putting on lots of sunscreen! No major injuries or burns today.
As of right now, everyone is just chilling after a busy day. We’re really looking forward to tomorrow which is our culture day when we get to check out the market, head to the beach, and go to a youth church service at night.
Overall it was a great day at work. We’re really enjoying working together as a team and serving God by serving the people of the Dominican.
Hope you’re all doing well back at home!
Mallory, Kristen, and Belinda
