Day One!

Hello everyone!

Our team met at TO airport VERY early this morning! We were there at 4am for our 6:15 flight. This first flight was on time, and we arrived safely in JFK at 8:00. We then rushed across the airport to our next flight, which left at 9:00. Everything in our air travels went safely and smoothly (except almost losing Tom at the US customs!), and was on time! Once in the DR, we went through customs without a glitch as well. Our ride was waiting for us, and the trip to our accommodations was also smooth.

While driving to the school in our crowded bus, we saw a fair bit of the city Santo Domingo. It was truly enlightening to see what the people in this country are like, and how different they are from ourselves. We discussed this in our team devotions as well this evening.

When we arrived, we were led to our rooms and had a quick snack. Then we went to meet the kids at this school- not the one we’re working on. (We will head to the other school tomorrow.) Although there is a huge language barrier between us and the kids, we made a connection. We played volleyball for a while with the kids, and they so wanted to talk to us. They tried to explain a different game to us, but because they only speak Spanish, it was impossible for us to understand. Despite all these differences, there was unity between us, the “Americanos” and the Dominicans. It is definitely a time for us to reflect on and treasure.

It’s just past 9:00 here as I write this, and it has been a long day for all of us. Yet, we still find time to play euchre together and bond with our team. This is an important part of our day! J Most of all, we find time for personal devotions and prayer. We thank God for our safe travels and this wonderful opportunity to serve him and be blessed by being a blessing to others.

That’s all for now!

Rachel
