“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (ESV).
Children are like seeds; they require intentional care, guidance, and nurturing to transform into who God created them to be. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us of the importance of shaping children early in life with wisdom and truth, which set them on a path that honours God.
Today, January 24, the world celebrates the International Day of Education and reflects on the state of education globally—its successes, challenges, and ways it shapes future generations. Education is core to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 global goals aimed at fostering sustainable development. Goal 4 of the SDGs, “Quality Education” calls for inclusive and equitable education for all.
At EduDeo Ministries, we believe education should do more than prepare children for academic and economic success; it should train them in the way they should go, equipping them holistically to transform their families, communities, and nations for Christ. However, we also recognize that not all education is created equal.
Education is a human right, but it is still out of reach for many children. According to the United Nations, over 260 million children worldwide are not in school. Many can’t attend due to poverty, child marriage, conflict, and disabilities. And yet, even those who go to school face significant challenges. Over 206 million children cannot read or do math at basic levels. This is often due to insufficient resources, inadequate teacher training, and scarce learning materials.
But even when children receive a good education, something is still missing. Education can provide knowledge and skills, but it cannot transform hearts. Only Christ can do that.
At EduDeo, we are convinced that education is more than academic success. It’s about equipping children to be agents of transformation in their communities. Christ-centred education teaches children to love their neighbours, seek justice, and live out their faith. It prepares them not just for jobs but to be disciples of Christ who can transform families, neighbourhoods, and nations.
We support quality, Christ-centred education by focusing on three key pillars: teachers, students, and schools. Each of these pillars plays an important role in creating healthy learning environments where children can grow holistically and serve their communities with Christ-like love.
We start with teachers because they are the foundation of transformative education. By equipping teachers and leaders to share Christ’s love in every lesson, we empower them to create classrooms where students can thrive academically, spiritually, and emotionally. Through EduDeo’s Walking Together program, we invest in educators' growth by providing workshops and ongoing training opportunities. These trainings include topics such as caring for students, supporting children with special needs, and strengthening school governance.
In addition to teacher investment, we provide holistic support for students by removing barriers to education. Programs like bursaries and scholarships ensure that financial challenges do not prevent children from accessing education. Skills training and health initiatives help students grow in all areas of life, preparing them to flourish as children created in God’s image.
Finally, we work with our partners to create well-equipped learning environments through school infrastructure projects. Building classrooms, dormitories, and playgrounds ensures that children have spaces where they can learn and play in safety and comfort. These projects are foundational to fostering environments where both students and teachers can experience and share God’s love.
Through Walking Together, Monès, a teacher in Haiti, shared her experience:
"This workshop has equipped me with valuable skills for my teaching profession. I now see and understand my students in a new way—by putting myself in their shoes to better understand their needs and God’s purpose for their lives. I am now able to approach my learners with greater empathy. This training has also empowered me to continue my work as a skilled psycho-educational teacher. Not only can I understand and analyze children’s challenges, but I can also guide parents in finding effective solutions to support their child’s needs."
In Ghana, our partners strive to see a decrease in school drop out rates through supports for children from vulnerable circumstances. With our partners, it is our shared prayer that more students will have the opportunity to experience life-changing transformation, as we have seen in past students who received vulnerable student support.
Gifty, a student in Ghana, reflects on the support her and her family have received:
"My parents need to add just a little to pay my school fees, and this has brought a lot of relief for my family."
Other aides, such as menstrual hygiene products, ensure girls can remain in school consistently throughout the month!
Hearing from teachers and students can be a powerful reminder that quality Christ-centred education transforms lives. With the right support, students can overcome barriers, unlock their potential, and become agents of change in their communities.
God is inviting us all, regardless of position, nationality, or skill - we are all together in the work of transformation. Thank you for investing in us and trusting us. We hope you join in celebrating the many lives transformed through Christ-centred education." Mario Matos, Executive Director, Sinergia (Dominican Republic)
As Christians, we know education can break the cycle of poverty. But more importantly, we know only Christ can transform hearts. Without the Gospel, education is incomplete. As we celebrate the International Day of Education, let us reflect on the transformative power of Christ-centered education.
On this International Day of Education, consider giving to create opportunities for transformation through education. As a global body of believers, we can break educational barriers, inspire hope, and build a future where every child has access to a quality education rooted in Jesus’ love. We know that when Christ is at the centre, education becomes a pathway to whole-life transformation – for children, their families, and for entire communities.
