COUNTRY:
Malawi is located in Southern Africa, bordering Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. It has a population of 19 million. The United Nations includes Malawi on its list of Africa’s least developed countries.
PARTNER:
CCAP Livingstonia was established by Scottish missionaries in 1875. It is one of the largest churches in northern Malawi, with 34 presbyteries and 237 congregations. 80% of the schools in northern Malawi are managed by CCAP Livingstonia as part of their education department. They manage 570 primary schools, 8 secondary schools, and 2 tertiary institutions – a technical college and a teacher training college. Because of their legacy in education, the CCAP Livingstonia education department has a close working relationship with the Malawian government’s ministry of education.
HISTORY:
EduDeo was introduced to CCAP Livingstonia through our partnership with CCAP Zambia. After preliminary virtual conversations, EduDeo staff travelled to Malawi in April 2022 for an exploratory visit. There, they met with 12 staff and board members from the education department to discuss partnership possibilities.
They heard from CCAP Livingstonia about their church and leadership, their approach to partnership, accountability structures, and vision and goals for CCAP Livingstonia schools.
They visited with leaders, teachers, and schools, and saw strong evidence of CCAP Livingstonia schools being involved in transformational community work. This included intentional outreach for students with disabilities and girls’ education.
To learn more about what partnership might start focusing on, our team facilitated a conversation to learn about CCAP Livingstonia schools’ strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats to growth. They also got to share about EduDeo’s work around the world, our vision for Christ-centred education, and the Walking Together program.
In May, EduDeo's board officially voted to add CCAP Livingstonia as a partner!
Here are two reasons we're excited about this new partnership:
CCAP Livingstonia has a high commitment to providing a quality education that promotes spiritual, physical, mental, and socioeconomic development in Malawi. There are two particular areas where this becomes very clear: girls' education and education for children with disabilities.
There is great potential for lasting impacts due to the number of schools CCAP Livingstonia works with, as well as their partnership with the Malawian government. Their impact in the sphere of education has the potential to be broad and far-reaching, and they desire to learn how to better steward their influence in education.
We are grateful to God for His guiding hand in this process of establishing new partnerships. Join us in giving thanks for CCAP Livingstonia and all they are already doing for Malawian communities!
