Day 5 is now over and once again we have been blessed with an incredible day. Last night we were able to experience a tropical storm in the tropics and it was quite the event. Torrential rains pounded our guest house and the rest of Matagalpa including our work site.
As a result, the first order of business this morning was trying to control water. Connor and Jon joined a team of workers pulling buckets of water out of the trench that was created for the footings of the new building. Since Connor is our resident military historian, it was quite appropriate for him to have a small taste of Flanders. Happily neither he nor Jon contracted trench foot.
The rest of the team was also very busy. Elijah spent the whole day a storie and a half in the air painting grating around the outdoor gym. Cam, Timon, Sarah, Dirk and Julianne dug a dozen postholes through clay and sandstone, no small feat. The rest of our crew continued to paint and address other tasks around the school. Since it was Saturday, we stopped work at 3:00, quitting time in Nicaragua on a Saturday.
After supper this evening most of our team walked downtown with Lester our guide and translator. The evening was beautifully cool and breezy and Matagalpa was alive with the excitement of Saturday night. We visited the cathedral in the downtown and spent time in the city square adjacent which is a real gathering place. As we walked we were struck yet again by the polite curiousity and reserved response we get from the people we meet. On some trips we have security concerns when we are out at night. Here in Matagalpa we feel more secure than if we were in Drayton.
Tomorrow we sleep in a little and then attend a Spanish Baptist church at 10:00.
Happily we continue to be blessed with good spirits and health and continue to be struck by the beauty of Nicaragua and its culture. We pray that that will continue.
