Day 1
Good afternoon. Mwatandala uli. It’s a warm Saturday afternoon and we all just finished a simple yet pleasant lunch. So much has happened in the last couple days, but I’ll try to keep it short.
We left Toronto Pearson Airport at 10:20 a.m. Thursday and flew via Rome to re-fuel. One of the passengers got sick so he had to get off while we were stuck on the plane for three hours (don’t worry, it wasn’t one of us). We arrived at Addis Ababa at 9:00 am and boarded another plane that was waiting for our late flight. Finally we reached Malawi after 3.5 hours, and were greeted with Philemon and the crew who took our luggage to the bus. I don’t know how they managed to strap it all onto a little trailer, but they did. We were sore, tired, sweaty, and hungry and yet the beautiful landscape took all those thoughts away from us. Just watching the kids playing outside their homes, moms walking with baskets of food on their heads and men loading trucks with feed bags and boxes. All of this is so different from our everyday lifestyles at home, it really makes you appreciate what we have and not take everything for granted.
We finally made it through the Zambian border and 20 minutes later settled in the guest house. We ate a lovely meal which consisted of fried chicken legs, cooked cabbage, nsima, and soup. After, Anita led us in devotion and we all headed off to bed nice and early. I think traveling for 26 hours finally got to us.
