Day 2 - Pick Axe and a Prayer

We awoke to a sunny breezy morning on the Carribbean ocean and had a wonderful breakfast prepared by our hostess Rosita in the outdoor lounge.

Shad was punctual and picked us all up and off to school we went.  We met Christian and the school staff and the school greeted us with an enthusiastic assemby of 166 students!  A little lesson on obediance from Deuteronomy Chapter 8 vs.5 and we were off to our respective jobs.  We got to decide whether to dig a trench for a fence they are installing or wiring rebar together.  We had Nacho,  Armando, and Shad show us all what was needed to do and away we went! 

The girls were all over tying the rebar together and actually had some time left over to meet with the students and teachers.  Meanwhile, the boys were struggling against dirt with pick axes, and rods, and shovels.  Fortunately for us, Armando is a patient instructor and only had to straighten up the fence line once.  It was hard work!  But it was enjoyable! 

At lunch, the principals family prepared a meal of chicken tacos that were amazing.....so amazing in fact that Krischan kept eating until everything was gone!  Then we practiced what turns out to be one of Billy's favourite times of the day......a quick siesta on the floor and back to work we went.  The afternoon was spent building some relationships and playing football  and games with the kids!  The Sloots were forced to eat some humble pie as apparently the Dutch don't have anything on Belize soccer players!  They got schooled for lack of better words!

A quick drive back to the hotel and a shower and we were ready for a team meeting to discuss how the day went and what everyone thought of their first day!  We all agreed that we have much to learn from these people.

Right after the meeting, Alvaron and his crew brought dinner over to us back on the patio at Hotel Maya. It was chicken,rice, and salad with some fried plantain.  It was great!  Sam emptied any and all chicken that was available, from anywhere, and Corey is still convinced that this is the best chicken she ever had. 

The patience and the grace that everyone has shown us is actually overwhelming at times.
