Hola from the Dominican Republic! Today was our first day on the job. Our alarms were set for 7:00, but a “friendly” rooster had us all up (except for maybe the guys) by 4 am. We had breakfast at the ministry centre and then headed off for the work site. We rode “Dominican style”, 15 people in the van, and along with the new sites and sounds, it made for an interesting ride. When we got to the job site we met the local workers, and then divided up into groups by our esteemed coordinator Victor, to help them.
Our tasks included sifting sand for plaster, mixing and scooping the plaster, and carrying buckets and buckets of it up to the second floor. Later on in the day, we also helped put in on the walls, and we are proud to say that most of it actually made it onto the wall! At noon, we were served a big, hearty Dominican style lunch, consisting of vegetables, rice, and meat. We worked till a little bit after 4, and then spent some time with some of the local kids, who were very excited to see some “Americano’s”.
After work, after some much appreciated showers, we gathered together for devotions and singing. So far our nights have involved a lot of relaxation at the Ministry Centre, so we should be well rested and ready to go tomorrow morning!
