Day 6: Success!

We met our goal for this trip! The floor for the new classroom has been poured!

It was a little more difficult for us to wake up this morning, as we started our day an hour early! However, we woke up to fog, which meant that the day was a little cooler. Unfortunately, that also meant that the humidity was higher than normal, so we were glad to be done at noon today.

The girls helped out in the preschool again this morning, and the kids got the chance to play on the newly finished playground! They loved it, especially sliding down the slides and swinging on the swingset! Those who worked outside were also serenaded by several rounds of 'Baby Shark' from the preschool classroom. It's evidently a favourite among the kids, as we heard them singing pretty loudly!

The women resumed working on the septic tank hole, taking turns using the drill and the pickaxe. Fortunately, the rock got much softer, so they were able to scoop the debris out with buckets. The hole got so deep that they had to use a ladder to get in and out! With their hard work and the help of one of the local guys, they managed to meet their goal and get the hole six feet deep! All that's left is to even out the bottom and the sides of the hole and possibly line it with cinderblocks.

The men, plus a crew of local church guys and a small concrete crew hired for the occasion, carted the cement onto the foundation and poured the floor. They had estimated yesterday that the work wouldn't be done until 1 or 2, but they were able to finish the job at 11:30! They even had time to pour small concrete pads for around the playground!

We celebrated with a traditional Belizean lunch of rice cooked with beans, chicken, and salad, and pop bottled at Belize's own pop factory! After lunch, our team went back to the hotel and took a walk down the coastline. The fog had completely burned away, and the view was amazing! Some of us kept walking, and some stopped for dessert on the way back to the hotel.

This afternoon was very relaxing, and we are ready to finish our last half-day of work tomorrow. This trip has gone so fast! Thank you for your prayers thus far. Please continue to pray for our health and safety and for a fulfilling day tomorrow as we finish up at the job site and visit three other schools in the afternoon!
