We woke to a beautiful sunrise this morning and the day ended with an equally gorgeous sunset. In between was a lot of hard work, three square meals, and more great laughs and fellowship with each other and our new friends. The weather has been a breezy 24 degrees. Sorry to make you jealous, but we have to admit we’re definitely enjoying it.
After arriving at Unity this morning in the school bus (we’re driven back and forth in it), Paul and Jacco went with our driver (and fellow worker) Luciano to get rebar and 12-inch hardwood forming boards. When they returned about half of us were involved in hoisting it up to the second story with strong ropes and delivering it to the necessary places. Most of the day was spent building enormous 3x12 foot wooden forms for concrete (with very heavy hardwood boards). Others continued to tie rebar together with tie-wire. The team is working very well together as we progress from one job to the next. One sign of that is the ribbing, which has steadily increased from the get-go!
Here’s a survey of some of the things that happened in and around the jobsite today. Megan got an elevator ride up to the first floor on a rope, courtesy of Paul and Santos! Then just after lunch Daryl was invited to the swing set by a pre-schooler, who kept saying, “Again!” to under-doggies. We also started to meet some of the teachers, who are trickling back to get their classrooms ready for next week. Finally, Natasha heard a young girl crying on the school steps so she went down to see what was happening. She said some of the others (including a cousin) had sat on her and called her names. It seems kids are kids, wherever you go. Natasha offered to play a game with her and it didn’t take long for others to join in. They were excited to come back tomorrow and see what other fun could be made.
Tonight’s meal back at Pastor Betson and Carolyn’s was tasty chow mien (ordered in). There are quite a few Chinese living here, who own most of the grocery stores. There are also many immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and other neighbouring countries. As a result the neighbourhood around the school is very multicultural, so one blessing of the school is that the children of the immigrants learn English, who then help their parents to learn it as well.
