Day 1: Groundwork

Question of the Day: Am I red because I'm hot, or because I'm sunburnt?

Thank you for all your prayers thus far! Today was an exhausting but fruitful day. We left the hotel at 8:30 and drove for half an hour to get to the preschool. The school is small but brightly painted, and the walls are hung with Bible verse banners and Christmas decor. Our host gave a presentation on Belize's history, current facts, and the Presbyterian schools in Belize.

Our main projects for today were digging ditches for the classroom's foundation and making rebar for the classroom's walls. We all worked together to break up a cement pathway, make the trenches wide enough and deep enough for the foundations, and wire together the rebar. Some local men from the church helped us throughout the day, and we also got to meet the preschool teacher and her two children. We all, especially the girls, loved playing with her one-year-old daughter.

It took us a while to get used to the sun and the humidity, but we managed to finish our projects with time to spare! It definitely helped that we had a delicious lunch of empanadas made by women from the church. By the end of the day, we were all tired, sore, sweaty, and sunburnt, but happy! Unfortunately, one of our group started feeling nauseous in the afternoon and is currently still sick. Please pray that she will feel better soon, and that we will all stay healthy and safe at the work site tomorrow!
