We have arrived!

Thanks be to God, for the opportunity to serve in Nicaragua, and for bringing us here safely! After an uneventful pair of flights, all the members of our team met up in Houston, after which we arrived late yesterday into Managua to meet out hosts, Peter and Trudy Kuipers. They got us over to the Nehemiah center which will be our home for the next 10 days.

This morning we made a few more introductions and it was straight to work - we have about an hour's drive to the jobsite everyday through Nicaragua's capital and biggest city, Managua. We were introduced to a few of the staff members at Escuela Cristiana Gamaliel, the school where we will be working. The job consists of building three additional classrooms which will allow the school to expand and offer secondary as well as primary education.

The work is hot and significantly more manual than we are all used to, but we pray it will be rewarding, both for us as well as those we are working alongside. One team has been on the project before us, bringing us to where we are now - forming and prepping the grade beams which will be the base for the concrete walls. It will be exciting to see our project start to come out of the ground as our time here progresses.

Our evening brought a dinner shared with Steve and Kim Holtrop and family, after which Steve presented us with a comprehensive history of Nicaragua. This country has had a very tumultuous past - which has led to being a country of great need in so many ways. It was exciting to hear how places like the Nehemiah Center and organizations such as EDUDEO are working to heal the scars left by decades of instability, dictatorships, and war.

We ask for your continued prayers, for our health and safety, as well as that of our loved ones at home. Please pray with us that God will use us not for our own purposes, but for His glory, and that we may love one another, just as Christ has loved us.

The Calgary - and Thunder Bay - HANDS team
