Day 8: Culture and Community!

We couldn't BELIZE today was our last full day here! (sorry, the others told me to say it)

Today was our day to learn more about Belize's culture, history, and environment. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise (well, some of us did... others slept in). After breakfast, we drove for 45 minutes to get to a river and then took a 1 1/2 hour boat ride with a local guide. He told us all about the flora and fauna of Belize, as well as some of its history and economy. It was a beautiful river, and there were so many different types of plants and animals! We saw lots of birds, an iguana, and even a crocodile!

The boat ride ended at Lamanai, where there are several Mayan temples. Our guide took us on paths through the jungle and told us more about the Mayan people, whose descendants now live in Belize and the surrounding countries. Our guide was part Mayan, and it was interesting to hear how the Mayan civilization grew and then gradually disappeared throughout the centuries.

After the tour, we went back to the hotel and then to a local Belizean restaurant for supper. Our food was great, and we spent time talking, playing games, and enjoying our last night together as a team. We walked home under the stars for the last time, completely content. This trip has been so fulfilling, and our departure tomorrow will be bittersweet. Please pray for a good night's rest, good health, and a safe trip home tomorrow!
