Sad Farewells

Today was our last full day in the Dominican Republic. Meaning we had to say goodbye to our new friends and family. In the morning we were back at work one last time, just for a few hours. There we were able to clean up the worksite and say goodbye to some of the people we saw every day there. There wasn’t too much work to be done which ended up being a good thing as a few us have started to feel under the weather. Just in time to head home.
The afternoon brought a relaxation and nap time. It helped us to feel rejuvenated and ready to finish the day off and hopefully fit for travel tomorrow.

For dinner we headed to a special last meal at Mario’s house. There we were joined by his wife and daughters and Guillermo, one of the main COCREF people, and his wife. We were able to partake in an amazing meal prepared for us by Mario and his wife. Once we were done eating, Mario told us a bit of history about the DR and the COCREF. He explained that to this day it is still very hard to be part of the DR with Haitian heritage. The local people still judge each other by their race and skin colour. And celebrating Independence Day makes this very hard as the Dominican people have made it about hating the Haitian people. And this is why COCREF started off by being geared towards the immigrants of Haiti, though now they population of the schools is more mixed.

We are so thankful for this wonderful experience and getting to know all of these wonderful people. But we are looking forward to being able to head home tomorrow to all of our loved ones.
