Day 8

It’s Monday – back to work we go!! Today was a day for pouring cement. We rented the cement mixer for the day, which was a huge blessing because there was lots of cement to pour and the sun was hot!

We all worked to fill the buckets of stone and sand so that the men could pour them into the mixer. The sidewalks and washroom floor are now complete so tomorrow we can do some more parging and brick laying. Even though it was hot and the work was hard, it was a joy to be able to work together. There was even new growth at the school today...5 puppies were born!

This afternoon we had the privilege of visiting one of the local schools, Belize Presbyterian Day School. This is the school that Pastor Alvara and Elsa’s youngest son, Eliezer, attends in Cristol Rey. The Principal took us around to each of the classrooms and each class performed either a Bible verse, sang us a song or played their recorders. In one of the classes we visited we taught them the version of Jesus Loves Me with the slapping on your knees and the clapping of hands. As we were walking outside, we could then hear the kids singing “nanana na nanana woo, nanana na nanana woo!” We think they liked our song!! In a different class we visited, they performed their memory verse, Colossians 3:23. This was fitting as while we were walking out of the classroom we noticed Wilma was wearing a t-shirt that had the exact same verse “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” Think God was trying to tell us something?

As we made our way back to the preschool and waited for our awesome dinner ladies to arrive with our food, we spent the time playing games and doing puzzles with all the local children that always seem to find their way to us when to they return home from school. This hour or two between work and dinner always reminds us why we are here. It’s not just about the work; rather it’s about building relationships here in Belize. The laughter and smiles on the kid’s faces warm our hearts day after day.
