As you could see from the photos posted yesterday, we got started at the school yesterday with a lot of shoveling, sifting and moving sand. Once mixed with cement powder and water, we got to haul buckets up the stairs and learn how to apply the parge to the second-storey walls. Using different muscles in temperatures we haven't experienced for many months challenged our bodies a bit, so we knocked off a bit early. After getting cleaned up, we got the great opportunity to visit a nearby supermarket, exchange some funds, and enjoy a refreshing treat. A hearty supper, team devotions, then some games & Internet time capped off our evening.
Gold medal hockey was the focus first thing this morning. A large high school crew made arrangements to project the game on a wall in the Center - unfortunately, the stream stalled a lot, so we missed seeing any of the goals, but other posts kept us up-to-date till we had to leave for church.
A short walk through the neighbourhood brought us to a small building pretty packed with both Dominicans and 'gringos' - another large Canadian team working with a different ministry was also attending this morning. That group included a pastor, so after some lively worship including a mixture of familiar and more local tunes, he bravely offered a message in English broken up by interpretation by their translator.
Returning to the Center, we cheered to learn the great news of a 3-0 Canadian victory in Sochi. Free time after lunch meant siestas, games and reading for a couple hours, then we hopped back in the van for a stroll through the Colonial Zone, downtown Santo Domingo. It's pretty impressive to see streets, churches, and other big buildings that are among the first in the "New World." We got to enjoy the sights and sounds of a bazaar, pigeons, and a military band in the main plaza surrounding a big statue of Christopher Columbus (the first European to discover the island).
Much lighter traffic, a quiet hearty supper and thought-provoking devotions capped off our restful day. We're eager to get back to the school tomorrow, meet some of the students, assist the workers and improve our parging skills tomorrow. Have a great night, everyone, and thank you for all your prayers and support!
