Day 5

“There’s a peace I’ve come to know, though my heart and flesh may fail,  There’s an anchor for my soul, I can say…It is well”   Jesus has overcome,  And the grave is overwhelmed, the victory is won, He is risen from the dead… And I will rise when He calls my name, No more sorrow, no more pain.  I will rise on eagles’ wings  Before my God fall on my knees and rise.  I will rise."

A song that we have been singing while we have been here in Belize and a song that is close to our hearts.  While we are here in Belize we have family and friends back home who are grieving the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  We are not able to be there to comfort and grieve with you, but we have been praying for you daily and especially today when you said your final earthly goodbyes.  We have been asking God to surround you with His loving arms, to give you the strength that you need to get through this valley.  Please continue to surround the Dehaan and Van Soelen families with your love and prayers.

We had been waiting all week for the sugar cane cutters to be out in the fields so we could see them at work. This morning we stopped on our way in to work and took some photos of the sugar cane cutters and had a quick lesson from Pastor Pott on how the process worked. They work hard for very little pay!!

We started off our day with a good protein breakfast and got instructions for the day.  The “ALT” group- Andria, Lloyd and Tim  set out to work on the outdoor facilities and the landscapers group tied rebar and made the new sidewalk ready. While the ALT group worked out in the back of the church, they noticed it was a little bit quieter than usual, and then we had chicken for lunch…

Devon, Ed and Pastor Pott’s son went to San Victor and cut grass at a church in the village.  Ed wandered around the neightbourhood and found a woodworker.  He was quite happy to be able to discuss business with a fellow woodsmanJ

We also prepared for VBS.  The children that attend schools locally do not have classes on Friday afternoons, so we prepared ourselves to have lots of kids today. We had a puppet show, songs with lots of actions, made the BEST glasses ever, had snacks, water balloon fights, blew bubbles, played soccer, made “cub” cars (we have a cadet counsellor with us) played Bingo and puzzled. It was a great day and the kids had so much fun and the adults did too.  The kids didn’t want to leave and some ended up staying with us until our supper arrived. The projects have been prepared for the cement, so some of us were able to help out with the VBS program today.   No words are necessary when you see the pictures, to see how much fun the kids had today.

We enjoyed a Belizian dinner prepared by wonderful women from the church and we headed home before the sun was going down.  Some of us headed into town to do a bit of shopping and for a delicious ice cream.  We are looking forward to our time away tomorrow to explore some of this beautiful Belizian culture and beauty.  Hope that we don’t get eaten by crocs or get lost in the jungle, although Devon has said he has watched most of the episodes of LOST and he would be able to get us home!!
