Day 4

When asking the group to summarize their experience of the day today in just a few words, one thing we all had in common was…it was HOT!  For some people it was sticky in the classroom full of kids, with the power out all day and no fans running, it can get a little warm. For others, it was hot to work outside shoveling up the ground surrounding the church to put in new sidewalks for the school.

We were blessed with little things like a tree that was above the sidewalk where the cement was being mixed and where the sand was sifted for parging, and fresh picked papyas for dessert, and delicious food prepared for us to eat.  Little things, but they mean so much.

Isaiah 40:31 says “that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up on wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Sometimes when our bodies are tired and weary it’s hard to believe that God will renew our strength, however we know that He is always with us, even when we are down. The kids learned that today in the story of Noah and the promise that God made to never send a flood to cover the whole earth again and that God always keeps His promises.

After some rest, food, water and sleep, we know we will be refreshed and renewed to begin our day again tomorrow. The same is true for our spiritual lives. Sometimes in our lives we find ourselves walking through dark valleys and we may face troubles, sickness, loss of a loved one, layoffs and broken relationships, but we know that if we wait on God, He will renew our strength and we have hope knowing that He will always be with us.

Today we continued building relationships here in Belize – with the kids, people we are working alongside with, those who just stopped by while walking past the school or picking up their children after class and even with each other as a group.

We spent lots of time in the sun today, digging up walkways, cleaning up grass along the school and making and pouring and smoothing the cement.

God has been blessing us here in Belize. Even when we hear of the projects we have been assigned, when we have sweat dripping down our backs, when we are teaching the kids and reading them stories and teaching them new games and songs, when we have volunteers come to help out when we thought we couldn’t turn another shovel, when we feel the breezes at just the right time and when we hear the news that we will be using a cement mixer tomorrow, we know that God is good.
