RIP Rosa

We were woken up at 5:30 and had to be ready to go by 5:45 for the game drive. We divided into two vehicles and we were off for the safari which we all were very excited for.

The drive was unreal and absolutely amazing to see so many animals in God’s creation and not in a zoo. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and had eyes like a hawk. Adam asked our guide if he had built in binoculars in his eyes he was that good. There were tons of impalas, warthogs, and various birds that somehow Adam knew all the names of. We saw a few herds of elephants, a couple dazzles of zebras, some saw a tower of giraffes in the distance, several rafts of hippo – just to share our new knowledge of what certain groups of animals are called. Plus we even saw a lion! Jerry who has been on a safari three times had never seen a lion before so we were very fortunate to have seen one. The two vehicles saw each other occasionally since our guides tried to show us as much as possible. The tour ended too soon and we were back by 10:00.

We packed up, loaded up Rosa, some grabbed a couple souvenirs and we were off on the road. Sadly we didn’t get too far before Rosa had enough and oil started to leak. A few of the guys tried to fix the leak but she needed a few parts. We lounged around under a wild mango tree which led to a throwing game with a local teenage boy where we tried to throw a mango into a hole in the tree. These mangos are only eaten by elephants, baboons, and monkeys...we had a very educational day as you can probably tell.

As for Rosa, we had to part ways and Philemon arranged for 2 vehicles to take us to the border which was about 2 ½ hours away. We somehow made it work and we and all our luggage fit. When we reached the border and passed through customs we transferred to another bus which was a tight squeeze – especially when a doorman is always added into the picture. We had about another 2 hours to Lilongwe and we were all antsy to arrive after having so much time driving today.

Once we arrived we stopped and picked up a few pizzas and coffee which we ate on the drive to the accommodation. We sorted out our rooms, packed up, enjoyed an evening coffee, and shared our pictures. Overall it was a long day but also a great one with a lot of stories.
