Day 2: Work Day

Hola Canada!

After a good night’s rest following a long day of travel yesterday, we made our way to Pena de Horeb school this morning. Many of us were taken aback by the living conditions outside the school – however, while the lack of material wealth was visible everywhere, the kindness and warmth of this community also came through.

On entering the school, we were greeted for the first time by the director [Alessandria] with warm hugs like one you would receive from an old friend. Alessandria and several of the students spoke with us (through our translator Juan) about the history of the school and its importance in the Mojarra community – we found out it’s not just a school, but also a community centre, medical clinic and provider of nutritious meals for the students, many of whom do not have the means to produce such meals in their homes.

Everyone has been so gracious and welcoming! This morning, we heard “thank you” in several languages including Spanish and Creole, and we had a great time with students who wanted to practice their English on us. We were truly humbled to be welcomed so warmly by everyone and knowing more about the importance of the school in this community made our first workday seem that much more important. Within the difficult conditions of Mojarra, God’s grace and love is alive at Pena de Horeb school and we’re blessed to serve here!

We rolled up our sleeves and got to work. (Actually, it was already VERY hot by 9:00a, so most of us were already appropriately dressed in short sleeves!) The local construction leads were very knowledgeable and had our workday all planned out – half of the team began clearing a newly-acquired plot of land (funded through donations) which will be the future home of Pena de Horeb’s recreation grounds and basketball court, while the other half spent the day bending, cutting and tying rebar for the concrete footings we’ll be pouring tomorrow.

We are very excited to see what God is doing at Pena de Horeb school and are feeling blessed to be part of His plan here! We’re back at camp now, sharing stories and gearing up for an evening of praising the Lord in song. We’re tired and a little sore, but very much looking forward to seeing what He has in store for us tomorrow!

God bless,
