Well, we made it to Nicaragua! After a long day of travellng, we were warmly greeted by Lester, our host at the Managua airport. We arrived at the Nehemiah centre and got settled into our rooms. as soon as we arrived, we became aware of how HOT it was! We unanimously agree we have never experienced humidity and temperatures this high. We still all managed to sleep in the heat, however! Tessa controlled her temperature by regularly using her battery powered fan during the night :)
We woke up at 7 this morning to a lovely meal with pancakes and fruits. We went right to the worksite (about a 1/2 hour drive), a school for preschool-Grade 6. the students aren't in class right now because of the earthquake warnings. They've been off the past 3 weeks! They may be back in class on Monday. We are constructing a libary, which is 5 m by 8 m. The 3 guys got to work by digging 4 ft down so we can eventually pour the foundation. The girls tied rebar cages. We were helped by several other workers from EduDeo, and Lester of course. As soon as we began, we were sweating like crazy! We had to take water breaks constantly. A highlight of the morning was the ice cream man came by and we all treated ourselves to delicious ice cream and popsicles. It was great! We hope he comes back the rest of the days. Once the rebar and digging are done, we will be pouring concrete. We have 4 workdays this week (Tues-Fri) and 3 next week (Tues-Thurs). We were promised by a young student at the school a game of soccer with him tomorrow, we're very excited!
We ended up leaving the worksite around 3ish (was supposed to be 4, but because it was so hot Lester noticed us starting to slow down a lot and said we were going to leave early) and went back to the centre, showered, and played some good old Dutch Blitz. After a delicious meal of chicken stir-fry and plantains, we are getting ready to play some more games. It's still extremely warm even though the sun is down. We've seen a few geckos in our rooms and around the centre, some of us are scared of them while others find them exciting.
We know a bit more about our itinerary for the weekend; Saturday we will be going to a pottery place, the Masaya volcano, a boat tour to Monkey island, lunch in Granada, Pizza Hut for dinner, and ziplining. Sunday we have church, going to a beach on the ocean, and viewing of a movie back here. Monday we will visit 2 schools, then a market in the city.
Tomorrow will be another (hot) day of working on the library. We hope to post almost every evening. We've attached a few pics from the day. Enjoy! Thanks for reading along and for keeping us in your prayers.
