Alabare!

Westdale HANDS Team:

Day 3

The day started out as usual, breakfast at 7:30 and leaving for the jobsite at 8. The day seemed a little bit more relaxed as we are all settling in and building good relationships with our fellow Dominican workers. When we arrived at the school, we began with a time of singing. We decided to try singing a song that we sang during our devotions the night before, Alabare! Which to our delight the locals and children loved, they even joined in singing during the chorus which is all in Spanish. A little boy was a having a wonderful time dancing to the music in a classroom door. Pieter couldn’t get it out of his head for the rest of the day either we all noticed!

Today we focused on hauling gravel and sand up to the unfinished second floor to make cement for the roof. We had a great assembly line going! Linda headed out to the town with our translator to pick up some crayons and paper for the Kindergarten children. After a much needed water break, a few of us ladies went to hang out with the kids again. They loved using the crayons and sharing them with us to use as well.

One thing that really stood out today was how God breaks down barriers, language barriers to be specific. Even though it is sometimes hard to communicate with the workers, teachers, or kids; singing, smiles, hand actions and some effort go a long way! Sometimes having things written down also helps to clarify what we are trying to say as I(Chelsea) found out with one of the teachers assistants.

After lunch, the guys continued the assembly line with sand and gravel, and the ladies pulled out nails from the used wooden forms and Chelsea got to straighten them! We seem to be ahead of schedule and Victor (our host and translator) ended our day early at 3:30. Everyone appreciated being back early for a much needed rest. We enjoyed another great dinner and devotions together. Harmen and Sherry ended off the night (date night) showing off their dance steps (Harmen must not have worked hard enough today, maybe we need to get him to work harder tomorrow).

Adios amigos!
