A piece of Don & Betty's minds....

Smithville 2013 HANDS Team:

Our morning started at 6am Nicaraguan time (two hours behind Ontario), after getting dressed we headed out to the meeting area for a coffee and to enjoy the morning peace. We look over the field that ten years ago was bare, now there are 2 Christian schools. As we watch the many mini buses come in and all the kids pile out it is such a joy to listen to all the laughter and excitement of a new day in school. Breakfast starts at 7 and this gives us some quiet time to pray before the busyness of the day starts.

After breakfast we pack up our gear and spend a short time with our prayer partner talking about any joys or concerns we might have. By this time Lester, our totally awesome chauffeur/interpretor/job supervisor, has arrived to take us to the job site. This morning Don got to ride shotgun and test his navigational skills; Don was bragging yesterday that he would be able to get us to the school after only taking the route once, so Lester took him up on that skill! It was very entertaining to see Don in action, and he actually did pretty good too, we didn't get lost! (understand that there are basically no road rules here, and little to no street names/signs; he was going by landmarks alone).

As you can see in the photos the school property is small but the excitement of the children is huge, and It is awe-inspiring. We came to be the hands and feet of Christ, but in return the children at this school have shown Christ's love to us. We are able to interact with them, play games and talk with them (via Lester the interpretor). Then Lester (the job supervisor) gives us our tools for our work for today. Holes were dug deeper, rebar was tied, some of the steel we've been cleaning was painted, concrete mixed and poured. There was also a lot of laughing, joking around and more friends made (and even some emails and FB information exchanged!)

Once back at the Nehemiah Centre we had time to freshen up (with the cool showers according to Don, COLD showers in Betty's opinion) and have some supper. At around 8pm we have our evening devotions. We can spend time together encouraging each other and spend time in Gods word and singing songs. Tonight we ended our devotions with a popcorn prayer which gave each of us a chance to say what we were thankful for, and for us there are so many. We are especially thankful that we were given the opportunity to be here, for the awesome people that we are here with, and we give thanks to God for using us in his service here in Nicaragua.

Hi Don & Betty! So nice to hear from you. It is so nice to see your personal reflections and read about your daily routines. It makes it feel so real to us back home. The pictures are also very helpful to visualize where you are. We really enjoyed seeing the picture of Emma and Jessica having a little fun with the children. Hope you will have a nice day touring other schools today! Shalom everyone...

It's good to hear your side of how it's going and I'm so glad it's all so positive! I am so proud of both of you and the step you took in going on this trip and very glad to see how God is blessing you! We are holding down the fort here and can't wait to hear your stories!

P.S. I am sure the showers are indeed COLD...at least to normal people :)
