Through the eyes of Jason.....

Smithville 2013 HANDS Team:

The first day in Nicaragua was very eventful for me; I literally rolled out of bed this morning!! I fell 5 feet to the hard concrete floor! Henry joked last night about my safety in the top bunk, which I think made Greg laugh even harder after witnessing the event. I'm ok though (mom); came out with only a small scrape on my knee.

Henry had us up and going by 5am, thinking it was 7am, so we had tons of time to check out the grounds here at the Nehimiah Centre. We ate our fill at breakfast, then had a history lesson on Nicaragua from Mark VanderWeiss, a World Renew employee. Around 10:30 we left for the job site. When we got there the school children sang for us and warmly welcomed us into their school and thanked us for coming to help them. We ate lunch and then found out that our assignment is to start an addition to the building. In order to build this addition there was a playground that had to be moved, which involved digging up tires surrounded by concrete. It was a long, tough, extremely sweaty job, (cuz its hot here!) and I broke two shovels by working so hard, but we managed to get the tires moved to another part of the school yard – involving digging some holes (which is apparantly what we'll be doing a lot of this week...). Some of the other team members (the girls) had to do some beam-cleaning, which I was glad I didn't have to help with. :)

The kids at the school were all excited to watch us work, and some of them even had the courage to talk to us! We're hoping to interract more with them in the work days ahead.

When we got back to the Nehimiah centre, we had supper of brown beans, potatoes, chicken, and rice waiting for us, so we ate, showered up, had some free time, and we will end the night with devotions before bed.

Now Greg, didn't you ask if the fello was ok first before laughing at him? So who's going to sleep up there tonight? Hope you have lots of rest, stay hydrated ok.
