Our day off 0 comments

Our Team:

Today was our off day.

We headed out from the port at Belize City on the ocean ferry and boated to San Pedro which is one of the large tourism attractions off the coast of Belize.  Belize has multiple islands beside it in the atlantic which are close to the Belize Barrier Reef which stretches up and down the atlantic coast.

When we got to San Pedro we headed out with 2 tour guides to go snorkeling at the reef.  We spent roughly 2 hours on the water.  Some of the highlights included sea turtles (one was quite large and close),  sting rays, baracudas, snapper fish, and a large green eel which was roughly 6 feet long.  We also went to a different section of the reef where they feed the Nurse Sharks.  Nurse sharks have no teeth and are not dangerous at all.  We swam around the boat from a distance as they went for the food our tour guides dropped.

When we were done snorkeling we went for lunch at a resort on the island, then for ice cream in the village.  We then had a couple hours to tour the island and relax on the beach.

Tomorrow we head home in the afternoon.

Thank you to all who followed the blog.  See you next year.

Today was our final work day at the school.  In the morning, a frew guys stripped the forms off the slab which we poured yesterday, while others completed parging in the girls bathroom.  Once this was done, we formed the lintel or header abve the girls bathroom stalls, then poured that concrete in the afternoon.

In the late morning, we all headed over to the church, located right beside the school, where we had a ceremony where the students and teachers of the school said thank you to us for the work we did.  All the kids were sitting in the pews of the church and we were standing at the front. One by one they all came up in a line and each student handed one of us a hand made thank you card and gave us a hug.  One of the teachers also sang a solo song, and the kids all sang songs for us as well.  Mrs. Betson (the Pastors wife and the schools principal) gave a speech as well.

Tonight we went to a restaurant called "Birds Isle" for dinner.

This morning was a late start, and to help the matters the bus broke down on the way to the school.  It was a 10-15 minute walk from the school, so some of us jumped off and walked to the school to get started.  The locals we work with stayed back and fixed the bus.  Turns out it was just out of fuel!

Today Flo, Jordan, Dan, and Manuel started Parging in the girls bathroom.  John was on the ground mixing mortar for them.  While they were doing that, Calvin and Josh were forming the slab over the tip of the boys bathroom stalls.  This will act as a storage area.

We poured the concrete over the stalls just after lunch.  Once that was poured and cleaned up, all of us focused on the parging in the girls bathroom for the remainder of the day.

We had a fancy lunch today as the picture shows,  these fish are called snappers.  They were yummy!

Today was Valentines day.  So this morning for breakfast, Pastor Betson made us waffles, heart shaped waffles. They were delicious!

Today we focused on plastering in one of the upstairs bathrooms.  We ended up getting all the walls done, including the stalls.  We will have a final product picture of it in tomorrows blog.  We had hoped to start some electrical work, but we were short on some material for it so we ended up just focusing on the plastering.  It was good to get that bathroom done today, because this means that tomorrow we can form and pour the slab shelf which is going on top of the stalls.

Tonight is couples night out for Valentine's day so we have the house to ourselves.
