Day 1: COCREF Tour and Settling In

Providence HANDS Team:

This morning came quickly after a relaxing sleep for some, yet not-so-comfortable for others, we all managed to make our ways out of bed to eat breakfast or to first explore the compound before.

We ate a delicious breakfast composed of pancakes, sausage, and watermelon. Shortly after we finished satisfying our stomachs, we all piled into an even smaller mini-bus/van than last night (yet still comfortable enough for the 12 of us). From there, we made our way around the city to various COCREF school (for those of you who don't know, COCREF is essentially called Christian Reformed).

At each of the schools, we were able to say hello to many of the students, and communicate a little bit further with the help of Mario, our translator/guide. At one of the schools we were also able to play some games with the students. The guys playing basketball, and the girls playing something like volleyball (there were even a few games of checkers that went down, resulting Canadian losses).

From there, we headed to a mall for lunch, and then to the EduDeo ministry center/school where we will be working.

Having seen a lot, and being tired of travelling from yesterday, we were brought back to the compound we are staying at. Now we were able to use the facility we had previously explored. The girls went to the pool, and the guys joined them shortly after they played soccer.

Following our fun, we ate supper, played card games, and then did team devotions. Our devotions this week are a series on the Armour of God, and tonight we learned that the Belt of Truth holds our faith together, and we must keep it close to our hearts and minds in order to do so. Then we continued to discuss the various differences between our culture and the Dominican's. We take many things for granted at home, but here everyone seems so excited, thankful, and willing to learn. We hope to be able to learn lots this week, in recognizing the good we have recieved, and holding fast to our faith.

We are so excited for the work we are going to do, and the relationships we will build. And we thank you for your prayers also.
