Day 7 - by Evan

Nanaimo 2015 HANDS Team:

Day 7: By Evan with input from Ashley

Today, instead of going to work at 8 like normal, we went to chapel with the students from P.D.S. It was their last day of school before their spring break, which they refer to as Easter break. We sang some songs, (and they were in English) and afterwards the classes had made us cards as a way to say thank-you to us for the work we did. The cards were all really sweet and it meant a lot to us that they had spent time making them for us. After chapel we helped the kids clean their classroom. Matthew and I (Evan) become the dream team when it comes to sweeping ceilings; we got rid of all the spider webs.

There was a pile of 200 cinderblocks and we (the guys) had to moves 160 of them up a flight of stairs. It was hard work but I enjoyed every second of it because I’m Evan. We put them into 4 piles of 40.

After we rested our arms we went right back to playing with the kids. I played football (soccer) with the grade 2 and 3 boys, while Ashley and Sam played with the girls. After we played football for a while, we sat in a circle, passed the ball around and got to know each other. We ended our time together by talking about who Jesus is and what He did for us.

After lunch we got ready to go to a Mennonite community called Shipyard about an hour and a half away. It was really cool and interesting to see how they live, even if we only saw a snapshot of their daily life. We stopped at the two stores in their midst and got drinks and chocolate bars, then drove to a nearby ice-cream place for more sugar. While we were getting our ice-cream, it started lightly raining, and once we had our treat we stood outside in the rain. Benjamin and Nathan had the excellent idea of buying a gallon of ice-cram to take back to the house. They didn’t realize that we were not going straight home, but looking at the different shops nearby. It soon began to melt, even with our best attempts at saving it. Most of us ended up buying a hammock, as we have all loved sleeping and napping in the ones at home.

Once back in Cristo Rey, it began raining a lot more and all of us but Nathan stayed outside, getting drenched in the rain. It was still warm outside despite the rain, which was warmer than the water we have to shower with. We stayed out until it was dinner and we had to go get cleaned up.

We are still ending the day bonding as a team. See you all soon, Evan. (And Ashley)
