Day 3

Nanaimo HANDS Team:

Today, Monday, we went to the CristoRey Presbyterian Day School to start working on the roof. We met Mr. Guillermo and Mr. Tom, who are our worksite leaders. They supplied us with the hammers and crowbars to remove the old roof off of the preschool class rooms, as the old roof was quite rusted and when we started removing nails, would crumbleThe teacher, Dorita, was very happy because she will not have to put buckets under the leaks during rainy season this year. She and her class are meeting in the library while we are working here. Some of us climbed onto the roof to remove nails, others hammered the nails up from the bottom, others took the rusted zinc old roof and put them in the pile. We also had to pick up the nails that fell onto the grass where the children would play. We finished this by lunch time, which surprised Mr. Miguel. We had a delicious lunch of rice and beans, stewed chicken and some salad then Sean and Mykelti played with themany children who wanted to chase them and Sean's hat. Amy, Courtney, Adrian and Aaron played with others of the children, who were very happy to talk with them and play some games with them.

While Peter, and Tom went to get supplies with Mr. Miguel, the rest of the team went to the Concepcion Presbyterian School to paint a large Chapel room upstairs. This is a much bigger school in the next village. We were able to prep the walls and paint the top portion white so that tomorrow we can paint the lower section green. The teachers there were also glad to have the help. They had painted the outside of the school with the parents and students in the community a few months ago, then bought the paint for the inside, but had not gotten to this.It was nice to work under cover, as some of us were a bit burnt from this morning's work.

The people from the schools, teachers, and children have been so welcoming. It has been a good first day of work.

It must get incredibly hot working outside, especially on the roof. Hope everyone brought hats.
