Guido 2016 HANDS Team:

The first day of the trip started at 3:45am at Pearson airport. Two hours later we were running to make the last boarding call for our flight to JFK airport. Apparently it’s important to listen to the announcements in an airport, but we were all too busy trying to connect to wifi.

The first flight went smoothly and as soon as we had arrived we were taking off again for sunny Dominican. The highlight of the first flight was the beautiful sunrise that everyone on the right side of the plane sadly missed. Thankfully, everyone on the left side of the plane made sure to take out their phones, and get a photo. The highlight of the second flight was the T.Vs in the back of the seat.

As soon as we landed in the Dominican, we were rushed to fill out forms and collect our luggage. Exiting the terminal we were greeted by hundreds of native Dominicans lining the walkways, and soon enough we found Mario, and our driver. The Dominicans do not have any road rules! The whole time we tried to find one speed limit sign, but we could not to any success. Our hour drive to our guest was like none other. You never realized how blessed you are until you see real poverty. At one point we stopped in the middle of the busy highway to fix our luggage van that had broken down, but we were all too busy yelling “Hola!” to everyone passing to actually notice that something was wrong with the vehicle.

At 4 o’clock we arrived at our guest house. We love our guest house! We’ve been so blessed to be able to live here for the next 10 days. The happiest moment of the day was when we learnt that our guest house contained a pool. As soon as we had finished orientation, we all jumped in. Dinner was served at 6, and we had Mario join us. Mario is the pastor and a executive director of COCREF. As we type we’re all trying not to fall asleep, staying up the whole night before was not a good idea

We can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us. We have been so richly blessed by God already, and we ask you to remember us in your prayers for the days to come.

We are so thankful you have arrived safely! We will pray for you all every day, that you will have a lot of fun together as you do the work set before you there, serving others and showing to others the love of Christ. May you be blessed and also be a blessing to others! Enjoy cooling off in the pool at the end of each day!:)
