Day 5

Edmonton HANDS Team:

Today was a very busy and emotional day for our team. We started the day with another great breakfast followed by a presentation from the director of ACECEN.

ACECEN coordinates the education program of the Nehemiah Center and collaborates with EDUDEO and Missionary ventures. We learned about the education system in Nicaragua and how our efforts are paving the way for a brighter future for the children Nicaragua.

After the presentation we had the opportunity to visit two schools. The first school was Gamliel. Five of our team members were here in 2013 and broke ground. Today it is fully functional and they got to see the end result of all their hard work. It was truly amazing. Next we visited a school where the Red Deer HANDS team built a new library. When the school first opened it had 48 students enrolled and today it accommodates 180 children.

For lunch today our hosts took us to a fantastic authentic Nicaraguan restaurant which was enjoyed by all.

After lunch we went to the viewpoint, which is where the National Palace stood before it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1972. Today it is a museum and is filled with the history of Nicaragua and Sandino.

As our day was coming to an end we made one more stop at a local market. This was a great way to end our day as we got to see lots of artwork, hand crafts, and woodwork created by the talented people of Nicaragua.

Today was a very educational day. After everything we have learned we are so proud to be on this journey together.
