Day 10: Work Day 7

Barrie HANDS Team:

Today was our last day of work, and we started the day with a special chapel with the entire school. The children enjoyed watching a short skit by some of our team members, and then they heard a short message from Leo. We taught the school a new song, and they taught us a song in Spanish. They concluded the chapel by giving each of us a number of cards that the students had made. Every student was given a name of one of our team members, and they made us cards thanking us for our hard work. We choked back tears as the children came up and gave us our cards along with big hugs.

Our work was similar as the previous days, and it involved a lot of tying rebar. We had to finish the work that we had started so that some locals could come and pour the roof. By the end of our seven days of work we have finished building the four walls of an auditorium. We also poured the concrete for the frames for the windows and doors, and the corner posts. We enjoyed seeing the walls build up because it was evident that we were being productive.

It was hard saying good bye to the children because we have grown so fond of them. There were many hugs exchanged, and lots of pictures taken. We are ready to come home tomorrow and we anticipate seeing our family and friends again. We have had an amazing 10 days, and we have made memories that will last a life time. We can’t wait to share all our stories with all of you! We ask that you pray for our safety as we travel home tomorrow.

We would like to thank all of you for your prayers. We have had an amazing experience with good health and safety. We have been blessed in ways that words can’t describe, and we have been able to bless others in Cristo Rey. And although we will be back in Canada shortly, the effects of this adventure will continue to resonate in our lives.  We have enjoyed being a light in Belize, and we owe part of this experience to your support. Thank you.

Good to see all of you back in church this morning. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing what you did in Belize in next Sunday's service. I'm glad you could be Jesus 'hands' in a place where it was needed.

When I picked up some of the team members on Thursday night, two of them were still wearing sandals :-) Wishful thinking (or brave!). At home they had to walk through a few inches of snow to get in. Then on Sunday Cor's story at church had everyone smiling, that while we weathered the -40 arctic blast here, the kids in Belize also found it cold. They came to school with toques on - after all it was only 15 degrees! What a blessing to hear how much they loved you and shared their appreciation for you. God is good!
