A Student at Nueva Creacion de Fe

The sun has just recently risen and reflects off the tin, make-shift homes that Starlin walks past on his way to school. His home is not that different. Starlin lives with his grandmother, mother and two younger sisters in a small poor community in the Dominican Republic. Starlin is familiar with the route and is eager to start a new day of school at Nueva Creacion.

His favourite subject in school is history. Starlin loves learning how the DR came to be a nation and how God has had a plan for all of creation since the beginning of time. Starlin knows that history is actually His story. Along with studying the past of Starlin’s country, he is learning about injustices and mistakes of his nation’s ancestors. The effects of those mistakes can be seen right in his own community. 12 years old, Starlin plans of becoming a lawyer someday because it is a way to help people in need. Starlin says, “God has been leading me to tell and defend the truth.”

Starlin became a Christian at Nueva Creacion; it was the first place that he heard about the Gospel in a way that meant something for his life. His teachers tell him often about the greatness of God and how He is powerful to help us in all areas of life. Starlin hopes to grow closer to God so that God can lead him to help the people in his community. This grade 8 student is the only Christian in his family, but he hopes that God shines through him and he can be a beacon, pointing others to the good news that he has learned at school.
