Noemi is 12 years old and a grade 9 student of La Esperenza in the Dominican Republic. She lives in the community and walks about 10 minutes to get to school. Noemi has two brothers and two sisters and her father is a professional Christian singer and songwriter. She seems like a typical pre-teen girl, with a cool dad, but her life has not always been so easy.

Two years ago Noemi had a serious allergic reaction and broke out in hives all over her body. For a long time, she was in constant pain and irritation. Noemi’s family tried all kinds of things at the suggestion of doctors and friends, but nothing they tried seemed to make a difference. Noemi was a very sick 10 year old girl. However, despite her illness, Noemi still wanted to go to school. She thrived off of the Good News that she heard from her Christian teachers and wanted to know more. She learned about God’s power through Jesus’ miracles. So many people in the Bible were healed because they believed in God. It gave Noemi hope and encouraged her to persevere in her faith.

One day, many people from her community came to La Esperanza and joined with her teachers and classmates to pray for Noemi. They prayed that God would heal her mysterious illness. The very next day the rashes began to dry up and fall away. They never did discover what she had, but for almost 15 months now, Noemi has experienced perfect health – a miracle that she and her community praise God for!

Throughout Noemi’s scary illness she looked up to a Christian psychologist who regularly visited her school from COCREF. She helped Noemi see her situation in a new light and Noemi’s relationship with God was strengthened because of her mentorship. Noemi calls this psychologist her role model saying that “she is a solid Christian!” Noemi wants to also be a Christian psychologist and is studying to help meet the many behavioural and learning difficulty needs in her community.
