A Student at Renacer

Melany, age 13, bows her head along with her classmates as they stand around the flagpole at the front of her school. As the Dominican Republic flag rises, they pray that God will lead them in their school day. Then Melany and her peers go to their neat and tidy classroom to hear a devotion that relates the Gospel to the day. Melany appreciates that there is an orderly feel about the school and her favourite subject is mathematics. Her teacher makes math really fun and hopes to become an accountant someday.

Melany started attending Renacar when she was in grade 7, and became a Christian shortly after. She finds that her teacher talk a lot about behavior – that she was made to live a life pleasing to God. This has helped Melany because her behavior was not always good, but since coming to Renacar her life has been transformed. Melany is conscious of her attitude and daily surrenders her life to God. Her family has noticed a drastic change in Melany’s behavior and now her Aunt wants to send her kids to Renacar as well! The teachers at Renacar are strong on discipline, but Melany is quick to say that they are very caring. Her face lights up when she talks about her teachers. It is evident how much they have made an impact on Melany’s life.

Melany knows that God has given her a passion for math and she dreams of becoming an accountant someday. She is also thankful that she has a solid Biblical foundation to her life because accountants can be easily tempted to misuse their talents for personal gain. Melany wants to change the norm and be a Christian accountant. When asked that this would look like she said, “A Christian accountant is one that is honest and accountable, not just because of the rules, but because of who she is in Christ.” Melany’s father is not a Christian, but she hopes that someday he, and others in her community, will be transformed by the power of the Gospel like she was.
