A Student at Belen

Fabienne, her mother, and her younger sister Kensi emigrated to the Dominican Republic when she was 11 years old, leaving her father and two other sisters behind in Haiti. Shortly thereafter her mother died during the birth of Betzaida.   Since their father had not emigrated to the Dominican Republic with them, the girls were left orphaned.  Fabienne and her baby sister went to live with one aunt, while Kensi went to live with another aunt.  Both aunts are single mothers, struggling to make ends meet, raising their children and nieces in extreme poverty.  These families live in the densely populated community of Los Guaricanos, on the outskirts of the city of Santo Domingo.

Fabienne’s aunt approached Belén Christian School, a Christian school that is part of COCREF, for help.  She didn’t have the means to even send Fabienne to public school, let alone a private Christian school.  The school decided to grant Fabienne a  scholarship, offering her an education and with it hope.  Fabienne has been able to experience God’s love in a Christ-centred environment, and this has inspired her to work hard.  Fabienne is an excellent student, with outstanding grades in all subjects. She is enthusiastic, respectful, and has excellent peer relationships.  When Fabienne was asked about her dreams, she said:

“I want to graduate from high school, and go to university to make a career that allows me to help my two other sisters who live in Haiti.”

Social and spiritual transformation is possible for her and for her family due to the opportunities offered by Christ-centred education.

Similar to many of the children served by COCREF, Fabienne lives in extreme poverty due to many different circumstances.  With the help of COCREF, Belen Christian School not only wants to provide the best education possible in their context, but also wants to offer hope, the chance to experience God's love in a Christ-centred learning environment.

Thanks to the support of individuals and organizations committed to the social and spiritual transformation of the most vulnerable, COCREF can provide the opportunity to study and build a brighter future for children such as Fabienne.

Fabienne’s prayer request is that the Lord will protect her sisters and father living in Haiti in very poor conditions.  She prays that one day she can meet them again.  She also asks that we pray that she can graduate from high school and that God will provide the means for her to go to university.
