A School that is part of COCREF

Sabana Grande de Boya is a sugarcane village (batey) in the interior of the Dominican Republic.  Bateys like this one are populated mostly by Haitian immigrants who came to the Dominican Republic seeking jobs as sugarcane cutters.  With the fall of the sugarcane industry, however, the economic poverty of these bateys has increased dramatically.  Jobs are scarce, medical services ar elacking, and hope can easily dwindle.

Juan Calvino was founded in September of 1983 in this batey, motivated by the need for education and to provide this important opportunity for this community. The school began with three teachers from grades 1-3.  In 1990, a 2nd storey was added to the building and, in 2000, they were blessed to build a computer lab, complete with 15 computers and a printer installed on a network!
