Announcing COCREF's New Executive Director

Blog Archives:

The board of COCREF (Colegios Christianos Reformados), an indigenous association of Christian schools serving some of the most neglected children and a ministry partner with EduDeo Ministries in the Dominican Republic, is excited to announce the appointment of Rev. Mario Matos as its new Executive Director.  This leadership decision strengthens the efforts of COCREF and EduDeo Ministries in bringing Gospel transformation to classrooms in the Dominican Republic.

An experienced educator and pastor, Mario Matos and his wife Yolanda, have served in various ministry roles in the Christian Reformed Church in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti.  Mario has been serving with World Missions in the Dominican Republic since 2006 and served as Board chair of COCREF from 2006 to 2010.  Mario earned a Masters of Arts in education and theology from Calvin College and Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Mario and Yolanda have been married for fifteen years and have two daughters, Susana Mariele (14) and Maria Magdalena (10).

Mario, who is of Dominico-Haitian descent, grew up in an immigrant batey community in the Dominican Republic and is uniquely qualified to lead COCREF education efforts in batey and low-income communities across the country.  The newly appointed Executive Director will serve alongside Academic Director, Norma Rene, and Neuris Cerda, the Administrator of COCREF.  One of Mario’s first tasks will be to lead a strategic planning process that will guide the vision and mission of COCREF over the next five years.

Hank de Jong, Executive Director of EduDeo Ministries, notes this appointment strengthens the leadership and capacity of COCREF.

“We have worked closely with Mario over the past few years and we are thrilled with COCREF’s hiring decision. Mario is hard working, diligent and an exceptional leader who loves the Dominican people.  Mario is a man of God. We’re delighted to work closely with Mario in advancing Christ-centred education in the Dominican Republic so more children, families and communities are transformed by the Gospel.”

Established in 1981, COCREF includes sixteen elementary day schools and five secondary schools. COCREF schools serve 3,700 students and employ 190 local teachers and support staff. An experienced global partner, EduDeo is well-equipped to support COCREF as the association of schools seeks to serve underprivileged students, families and communities in the Dominican Republic.

Dear partners,

Thank you so much for this warm reception. My wife Yolanda and I are very grateful for this calling and opportunity to continue serving the kingdom our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through this great ministry COCREF is carrying out with the least, the last and the lost in at-risk communities of the Dominican Republic.

We appreciate your continued support and partnership.

Peace,

Mario
