Advent Devotional Series: The Heart of Christmas

Blog Archives:

Scripture Reading: John 3:1-16

The Christmas Season can be a stressful time and we find ourselves often distracted. There are trees to decorate, gifts to buy, meals to prepare, family & friends to visit and Christmas programs to attend. I must confess that while I love this season, it can sometimes feel very overwhelming and just too much.

As December begins, I find it very helpful to remind myself of the real meaning and Sacred Heart of Christmas.

John 3:16 leads us there. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal Life.”
Martin Luther, the great Reformer, called this text the heart of the Bible. It is so simple a child can understand it but so deep that no one can fully comprehend it. And here is why.

God...the greatest lover!

So loved...the greatest degree!

The World...the greatest number!

That He gave...the greatest act!

His one & only Son...the greatest gift!

That whoever...the greatest invitation!

Believes...the greatest simplicity!

In Him...the greatest person!

Shall not perish...the greatest deliverance!

But...the greatest difference

Have...the greatest certainty!

Eternal Life...the greatest possession!”

(Martin Luther)

This is the story of God’s love for His World best seen as we contemplate the love of God in Jesus Christ at Christmas.

Welcome to Christmas 2013.

Thanks for reminding us, in the busyness of life, what the message of Christ is all about.
