What's Your Role: A Canadian Christian Principal

Blog Archives:

Jason Schouten is the Principal of St. Thomas Community Christian School.  We asked him what his role is in relation to the ministry of EduDeo and his school's involvement in the School2School program...

First, I believe that my role is to develop God-honouring relationships.

It is my responsibility to develop meaningful relationships between myself and Ruth (the principal of New Life Christian School) and between staff and students at both schools.  I believe that it is important that we educate each one of our students to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and “love your neighbour as yourself.”  (Matthew 22: 27-28).  We accomplish this by teaching our students who their neighbour is and how to develop healthy, respectful relationships with them.

I believe that we are prone to being selfish.  God wants the opposite of us.  As Christians we are called to care for and love each other.  The School2School program gives our schools an opportunity to do that by providing a foundation to build relationships on.  As the principal of St. Thomas Community Christian School (STCCS) and a member of the School2School program, it is my role to make sure that we continue to promote growth in the hearts of our students to love their neighbours.

Second, I believe that my role is to help design a vision for the School2School program.

Since the School2School program is relatively new, I believe that I have the unique privilege to contribute to the development of the program.  I believe that the School2School program has huge potential to impact our students’ lives in a very rich and meaningful way.  When I was growing up, we had the opportunity to learn about people from different places through books and lesson plans.  Now, through the development of technology, our students could have the opportunity to actually collaborate with students from other countries.  We have the opportunity to move beyond “text book” learning and provide our students with real relationships with students from different cultures and countries.
