Advent Devotional Series: Big Enough

Blog Archives:

Over the month of December, we will be posting an advent devotional written by Rev. David Tigchelaar each week, up to and including Christmas.  It is our prayer that these meditations will be a blessing to you as you contemplate what our Lord has done for us this Christmas season.

Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped...” (Phil 2:6)

We celebrate and remember once more this Advent Season, the most amazing story ever told. God became man - reached down from heaven's heights and entered our history with the love of God Himself. It was a once-in-a-lifetime reversal of the flow of human history.

The Bible reveals the sad and distorted stories of man seeking to be like God. Power and authority were adorned with gold and silver and wealth and armies, overpowering all who would stand in the way of the clenched fist.

Christ’s power was different.

It was an emptying. It was a dying. It was a giving, so that humankind might receive. And Christ as both fully God and Man was big enough to carry the sin and brokenness of the world.

Christ was heaven's answer to our sad history of misguided power turned into the one goal of accumulating more wealth, more armies, more power to dominate, kill and verpower by being the king of the castle. The world has never been the same since it was touched through Christmas by the divine presence of God Himself.

At EduDeo we see it daily: teachers who teach through the spectacles of this God who was big enough to carry the hopes and aspirations that life in Christ is different. We see it through homes and students that, in Jesus, are lifted up from poverty and hopelessness to the great themes of the Advent story - that life in Jesus can be turned away from selfish ambition (Phil 2:3) toward the interests of others.

That’s an amazing turnaround, demonstrated supremely in Jesus who was in the very nature of God but made Himself nothing for you. And He calls you to have the same mind as Him!
